Built for your brand

Every mailCMS customer gets an email design system of their own. Our specialists design and code the modules and components your programme needs, so every email starts on-brand and stays that way.

Why not just use your ESP’s editor?

Most ESPs come with an email editor built in. It’s designed to work for all of their customers, so your brand has to fit around it. With mailCMS, your team builds from a design system made for your brand, and you keep sending from the platform you already use.

Your ESP’s built-in editor

  • Generic blocks you style to fit
  • Brand guidelines that live in a PDF
  • Anyone can change fonts, colours and spacing
  • Code written by the editor as you build
  • Templates tied to one platform

mailCMS

  • Modules designed for your brand
  • Brand rules built into the system
  • Fonts, colours and spacing stay on-brand
  • Hand-coded HTML, tested across inboxes
  • Build with mailCMS, send with anything

Designed around your brand and your content

We start with your brand guidelines, the emails you send today and the things you need to say. Then we design every module your programme needs, prototype each one for your review and refine it with you. Nothing is built until you’re happy with it.

  • Modules for every campaign and automation you run
  • Your fonts, colours, imagery and tone
  • Rounds of review before anything is built

Hand-coded by email specialists

Most email editors write code as you build, and the results are often bloated and buggy. Every mailCMS module is hand-coded by our email developers, with semantic markup that makes it as accessible as possible. When your team builds an email, the editor only swaps your content into that code, then strips out its own tags on export. What reaches your ESP is clean, production-ready HTML.

  • Semantic markup, built for accessibility
  • Editor tags stripped on export
  • Tested on real devices and in Email on Acid

Brand rules built in

Your brand guidelines are part of the system itself. Your team chooses the words, images and links, and colour, type, spacing and layout follow your rules automatically. Nobody needs to check the brand book before an email goes out.

  • Colours limited to your palette
  • Type, spacing and layout set by the system
  • Your team edits content, never code

A system that grows with your programme

Your design system keeps growing after launch. When a campaign or automation needs something new, tell us. We’ll scope it, design it to match everything else and add it to your system for your whole team to use. You’ll have direct access to our team whenever you need us.

  • New modules scoped and added as you need them
  • Designed to match the rest of your system
  • Direct access to our team

How we build yours

Every engagement is different, but a typical design system comes together in four stages.

  1. Discovery

We learn how you build emails today, from your platform and team to your output, and what you want it to become.

  2. Design

We design every module your programme needs and prototype each one for your review, with rounds of feedback until it’s right.

  3. Build and configure

We hand-code your design system, set up your personalisation tokens and fields for personalisation, and connect it to your ESP where supported.

  4. Handover

Your team tests on a staging environment, we set up your users, and then we hand over the keys.

FAQs

Can we use our existing templates or design system?

Yes. If you already have templates or a design system, our team can bring them into mailCMS. Sometimes that’s a straightforward setup, and sometimes a rebuild gives better results. We’ll look at what you’ve got and recommend the best approach.

Can our own designers be involved?

Of course. Some clients come to us with a blank slate, and others have an in-house design team they want to keep involved. The process adapts to fit, and your designers can review every module before anything is built.

How long does a design system take to build?

It depends on the scope. A system with a handful of modules is naturally quicker than one for a large, complex programme. Our team will give you a realistic timeline once we’ve scoped the project together.

What happens when we need a new module?

Tell us what you need. We’ll scope it, design it to fit your system and add it for your whole team to use. Most design systems grow like this over time.

What if we have more than one brand?

Each brand gets a design system of its own, built around that brand’s guidelines. They can all sit in the same mailCMS account, and we’ll scope what each one needs during discovery.

Can we send emails in more than one language?

Yes. You can set up a master email with merge tags for the translated content, then upload a CSV file with the text for each language. mailCMS uses it to build a separate version of the email for each language.
